The beginning of vilcacora as a currant plant dates back to a period approximately 2 000 years ago.  For many centuries, it was traditionally used mainly by tribes coming from the area of present Peru, although it expanded to a rather large area.  However, the modern history of discovery of currant action of vilcacora starts only in the 1960’s.  This is when we discovered the first ethno-pharmacological methods of use and the content of active substances was determined for the first time.  The first complex study of the species, which resulted in sale of the first extracts from vilcacora in Austria and Germany, was not conducted until the early 1970’s.  Fast spreading reputation of its almost miraculous action provoked interest in this plant in pharmaceutical companies all around the world.  The registered several patents in USA, which concerned extraction of a umber of alkaloids and their immuno-stimulation activity.  In 1994, the World Health Organization (WHO) held the first international conference focused purely on vilcacora.  In this conference, the discovery and specification of contained substances received an importance similar to the discovery of Peruvian bark (Cinchona sp.) and insulation of quinine.
The traditionally used drug from vilcacora is a cure from trunk and roots with a diversified complex of contained substances.  The most significant are proanthocyanidines, derivates of quinovic acid, also carboline and oxydol alkaloids, such as pteridine, uncarine, hirsutine, and others, but also polyphenolsand phytosterols (stigmasterol and campesterol).  Important is also the immuno-stimulation activity that is most likely a result of action of an entire complex of substances, although the exceptional action is accredited mainly to alisopteridine alkaloid.  The triterpenoid alkaloids and glucosides of guinovic acid prove an apparent anti-virous activity.  Proanthocyanidines has the ability to reduce brittleness of blood capillaries, and along with another substance – rynchophyllin – efficiently inhibit agglutination of thrombocytes and formation of blood clots.
Use: Vilcacora is used for treatment of inflammatory diseases, asthma, rheumatism, arthritis, menses disorders, infection of urinary tract and gastric ulcers.  In some areas, it is also used for treatment of mental diseases, but also as preventive, regeneration, anti-allergic and tonizing agent.

At the present, vilcacora is mainly used as an efficient immuno-stimulation agent in treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome, yeast and mold diseases and herpes.  It is also used with diseases of locomotive organs, such as aching joints, muscles, tendons, including rheumatism.  It is also efficient in infectious diseases, such as influenza, bronchitis, catarrh of upper respiratory tract, but also conjuctivitis.  It significantly improves condition of vessels, decreases blood pressure, and so it can be successfully used in treatment of some cardiovascular diseases.  It is also recommended for treatment of the digestive tract diseases, such as colitis, flatulence, intestinal microflora disorders, gastric catarrhs and ulcers, diabetes and hemorrhoids.  The clinical research is currently focusing on anti-cancer, anti-oxidation and anti-inflammatory action.
